JA Earth Week Career Speaker Series Event Takes Students on Virtual Voyage Through Marine Industry, Conservation

(RIVIERA BEACH, Fla.) — Junior Achievement's Earth Week event took students on a virtual voyage through the marine industry, offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at various facets of marine craftsmanship and conservation.

Sponsored by Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back, and supported by Waste Management and Keep Palm Beach Beautiful, the week-long event, from Monday, April 22nd to Friday, April 26th, featured daily 30-minute sessions led by industry experts.

On Day 1, participants embarked on a journey with boatbuilders at Albury Brothers Boats in Riviera Beach, delving into the intricacies of vessel construction. From the skilled hands crafting the hulls to the meticulous attention to detail in every component, students gained insight into the artistry and precision of marine craftsmanship.

From sampling site selection to laboratory analysis, students learned about the critical measures taken to ensure the safety of recreational water activities.

Day 3 saw a deep dive into marine conservation at the Manatee Lagoon – An FPL Eco-Discovery Center®. Participants were treated to an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the educational attraction, situated along the picturesque Lake Worth Lagoon. Marine experts shared insights into the industry and exciting career opportunities, while interactive exhibits showcased the beauty and importance of manatees and their ecosystem.

The event continued with a visit to the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center on Day 4, offering participants a glimpse into the wonders and career opportunities in environmental awareness and education. Spanning 57 acres on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, FL, the center served as a beacon of environmental stewardship, nestled between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Wrapping up the Earth Week event, Deputy Joseph Pollock from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office marine unit shared insights into marine law enforcement and safety. The unit's responsibilities, including enforcing marine laws, investigating accidents, and conducting search and rescue operations, provided valuable career perspectives for aspiring marine enthusiasts.

Through this immersive experience, students gained a deeper appreciation for the marine industry's intricacies, environmental conservation efforts, and career pathways. Junior Achievement's Earth Week event served as a catalyst for inspiring the next generation of marine stewards and conservationists.
